Scientists have discovered yet another way that microplastics could be a threat to our health. A new study has suggested that plastic particles from polystyrene cups and takeaway boxes may be able to reach our brains and trigger symptoms of a neurodegenerative disease.
Microplastics- teeny tiny pieces of plastic smaller than five millimetres - can get into our bodies through the food we eat, the water we drink and even through the air we breathe. And new research from the University of Rhode Island has suggested that these particles could contribute to Alzheimer's.
The study , published recently in the journal Environmental Research Communications, indicated that the accumulation of micro and nanoplastics in the brain can lead to cognitive decline
