Following the killing of conservative activist Charlie Kirk, fewer Republicans say the country is on the right track, according to a new poll.

An Associated Press (AP)-NORC poll conducted between Sept. 11 and Sept. 15 found that 49% of respondents who identified as Republicans say the country is on the right track. The findings represent a sharp decrease from AP-NORC’s June survey, in which 70% of respondents who identify as Republican said the country is heading in the right direction.

The decline in optimism among members of the GOP is larger than it was between October and December 2020, when President Donald Trump lost his re-election bid, the Associated Press reports .
