KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (WATE) — It's been nearly one year since Hurricane Helene tore through the region and left a lasting impact in East Tennessee. As Helene approached, experts at the Tennessee Valley Authority's River Forecast Center in Knoxville were tracking its every move.
The TVA River Forecast team did what they could to prevent damage, but Helene brought catastrophic flooding to many communities, even areas TVA couldn't fully protect. From the storm, the Tennessee River watershed received two months' worth of rainfall in just three days.
TVA lowered reservoir levels in preparation to make room for the storm. As flooding began, crews were already responding.
