Seven Illinois Congressional Democrats on Friday voted against a House resolution condemning political violence and honoring Charlie Kirk’s life — reflecting a divided reaction to Kirk’s legacy in the aftermath of his murder.
The ceremonial resolution, introduced by House Speaker Mike Johnson, calls Kirk a “courageous American patriot,” and said his “commitment to civil discussion and debate stood as a model for young Americans across the political spectrum.” It also asked lawmakers to “stand united in unequivocal condemnation of political violence, regardless of their ideology.”
The language praising Kirk as a “model for young Americans” and stating that he worked “tirelessly to promote unity” was enough for 58 Democrats to oppose the resolution. Another 38 voted present and 22 didn’t v
