The President of Texas A&M University, Mark Welsh, is stepping down after a viral video captured an exchange between a student and professor over gender studies.

Welsh's resignation is effective as of 5 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 19, according to a Texas A&M news release , in which the university's chancellor, Glenn Hegar, thanked Welsh for his service.

“President Welsh is a man of honor who has led Texas A&M with selfless dedication,” said Hegar. “We are grateful for his service and contributions. At the same time, we agree that now is the right moment to make a change and to position Texas A&M for continued excellence in the years ahead.”
