WASHINGTON, D.C. (WLNE) — Senator Sheldon Whitehouse has reached across the aisle, and has authored a new bill with South Carolina Senator Tim Scott to study why quahogs, and other native shellfish populations, are declining on the east coast.
The Quantifying Uncertainty and Action to Help Optimize Growth of Shellfish Act, or “Quahogs” would create a task force combining federal, state and business leaders to learn what’s driving the decline.
While Senator Whitehouse noted it would help strengthen Rhode Island’s blue economy, Senator Scott said it would help his state’s shellfish industry, and the restaurants and commercial fisherman who depend on it/
