COLUMBUS, Ohio - Ohio Lieutenant Governor and former Youngstown State University President and football coach Jim Tressel has decided against entering the 2026 Ohio Gubernatorial race.

According to a statement posted to Tressel's Facebook page, he said he and his wife Ellen had decided against entering the race for governor after "considerable thought and prayer."

Tressel's statement went on to discuss what he would be focusing on for the remainder of his term as Lieutenant Governor, with Tressel saying he wants to focus on opportunities in the areas of education and workforce.

Specifically, Tressel highlighted the "Team Tressel Fitness Challenge," an initiative started by him and former Ohio State football player Ted Ginn Jr. The program was brought to multiple Mahoning Valley school
