BUCKHANNON, W.Va. (WBOY) — A high-ranking West Virginia Department of Education (WVDE) official says Upshur County Schools have made progress under the past two years of state intervention and that some local control could begin to return to the district as soon as next year.

At the Sept. 11 Upshur County Board of Education meeting, Jeffrey Kelley, Assistant Superintendent of the WVDE's Division of Accountability Programs, said the outlook was "promising."

Kelley said the items he's been monitoring over the past six months have been largely academic in nature and not the sort of "operational issues" that triggered a Special Circumstance Review and ultimately, state intervention.
