SOUTH LOOP — A plan to build a soccer stadium at The 78 cleared another hurdle Thursday after the city’s plan commission approved a $650 million proposal from the Chicago Fire and development firm Related Midwest.

The commission voted to rezone a 62-acre stretch of vacant land buttressing the Chicago River for the privately funded, 22,000-seat stadium, which will serve as a key attraction for The 78, an $8 billion megadevelopment. The team must now get the go-ahead from the city’s zoning board before making its pitch to City Council.

If all goes according to plan, owner Joe Mansueto’s dream of a spring 2028 debut could becomw reality.
