The U.S. Department of Homeland Security blasted Portland Mayor Keith Wilson on Friday, two days after he said immigration officials violated an agreement with the city that allows them to operate a facility near downtown.
The city issued a notice of violation Thursday, alleging that the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement on 25 occasions held detainees at the South Portland building longer than 12 hours — a contravention of the facility’s conditional land-use permit.
The city also cited the facility for boarding up its windows on the ground floor. If violations continue after 30 days, the city could fine ICE. In 60 days, the Portland Permitting & Development department could reconsider ICE’s land-use approval, potentially closing the federal agency’s office, the city has said
