SUMMERVILLE, S.C. (WCSC) - Summerville Police have arrested and charged a man who reportedly shot his wife on Thursday afternoon.

Billy Portis Jr. was arrested and charged with domestic violence of a high and aggravated nature and possession of a firearm during the commission of a violent crime, Deputy Chief Chris Hirsch said.

Officers responded at approximately 3:15 p.m. to the Lakes of Summerville for a reported shooting.

When officers arrived, they found Portis, who said that he accidentally shot his wife when he was cleaning his gun. Officers found the victim inside the home with a gunshot wound to the face.

The victim told officers during the investigation that she and Portis engaged in a verbal altercation, and Portis threatened her with the gun before shooting her.
