A euthanasia operation that police say could be linked to up to 20 deaths, which posed as a whale charity to access deadly animal drugs, captured the nation’s attention this week.

But it also raised sensitive questions about Queensland’s voluntary assisted dying laws.

Legislation allowing voluntary assisted dying has been in effect in Queensland since 2023. In the 18 months after it was introduced, 1038 people died from the administration of a voluntary assisted dying substance.
