RENO, Nev. (KOLO) -Every Thursday the sound of guitars comes from the Reno Elks Lodge, although it’s not always as smooth as it could be.
That’s because they are guitar classes. Specifically, “Guitars for Vets.”
There are 150 programs nationwide, the Reno Elks Lodge opened its doors to “Guitars for Vets” locally in 2021 and has supported it ever since.
David Allison remembers helping start the program with Tim Berry who asked him to become an instructor.
“At first when Tim asked me, I was reluctant,” says Allision. “Because I didn’t really want to commit to anything. I am retired. And then after about two lessons of teaching. I was hooked.”
The students come from the VA’s Recreational Therapy Program.
There’s a waiting list of almost 40.
