Utica, N.Y. — An Illinois man entered a guilty plea Friday, admitting he fatally shot a Utica man in April.

Darius Steward, 32, was charged in June with second-degree murder in connection with the death of Omar Mitchell , 33, according to the Utica Police Department.

Steward took a plea deal that calls for a 20-years-to-life prison sentence, according to a news release from the Oneida County District Attorney’s Office. He faced 25 years to life for the murder charge.

Mitchell was shot on Walker Street in Utica on April 22, police said.

Steward was quickly identified as a suspect and the case was presented to a grand jury. After Steward was indicted by the grand jury, the U.S. Marshal’s Fugitive Task Force worked with Utica police to locate him, police said.
