BOSTON —

Massachusetts Governor Maura Healey is taking issue with the state's gas companies over plans to raise rates again this winter.

The utility proposals come less than a year after large rate hikes, combined with exceptionally cold weather, resulted in many customers across Massachusetts getting hit with the largest monthly heating bills they had ever seen.

National Grid's proposal shows gas bills should be about the same as last winter, but Eversource has asked the state Department of Public Utilities to approve increases of at least 13%. Some customers could pay as much as 17% more.

"These rate hikes are outrageous," Gov. Healey said in a statement to NewsCenter 5. "I am urging the DPU to scrutinize this proposal and push back on Eversource. We need to lower costs for families
