President Donald Trump signed a proclamation Friday raising the annual fee to obtain an H-1B worker visa to $100,000, a significant change to the program tech companies in Washington state and beyond rely on to employ thousands of foreign workers in the U.S.
This is not the first time Trump has eyed changes to the H-1B visa program, but the move could be unpopular among tech leaders welcomed into the White House lately, as companies like Amazon and Microsoft have relied on the program to hire workers from abroad to join U.S. offices.
Current fees associated with the H-1B visa application include a $215 “general filing” fee, as well as $780 fee for the employer sponsor to file a petition for the worker, among others.
