ALBANY, N.Y. (NEWS10)---A New York State lawmaker has introduced a new bill to crack down on license plate fraud.

Without your knowledge, a license plate number linked to your name could be used by someone illegally.

Republican Senator George Borrello said some residents in his Western New York Senate district had this happen to them.

"Someone can have their financial lives destroyed by this," explained Borrello. "The one couple in my district had thousands upon thousands of dollars in fines, and it harmed their credit and just became a nightmare for them."

To crack down on license plate fraud, the senator introduced a new bill that would strengthen penalties if a fake plate were knowingly sold and used.
