COCONINO COUNTY, AZ (AZFamily) — Earlier this year, a report by The Washington Post came out showing the Trump administration is targeting national monuments to increase energy development.

Two new bills that were just introduced could take away environmental protections from over a million acres of Arizona land to reach that goal.

The Baaj Nwaavjo I’tah Kukveni-Ancestral Footprints of the Grand Canyon National Monument, was established in 2023 by former President Joe Biden.

It sits just 10 miles from the Grand Canyon and was established at the request of 13 tribal nations. Sandy Bahr, with the Sierra Club - Grand Canyon chapter, said it was created to protect almost a million acres of sacred land for them and the public.
