PORTLAND Ore. (KPTV) - The Department of Homeland Security is firing back at Portland officials after the city cited Immigration and Customs Enforcement for zoning violations at its South Macadam Avenue facility.

In a notice sent Thursday, the city said ICE broke the terms of its conditional use permit by holding detainees for more than 12 hours inside the facility, which is only authorized to operate as a short-term processing center. The city also cited ICE for covering windows and doors with boards, a violation of local zoning codes.

Hours later, DHS released a statement rejecting those findings. Assistant Secretary for Public Affairs Tricia McLaughlin called the city’s investigation “nothing more than a FOIA request” and accused local leaders of playing politics.
