TUCSON, Ariz. (13 News) - This summer, rideshare giant Uber announced a pilot program offering the option for women passengers to request women drivers, and vice versa.

But it’s not yet available in Arizona.

There are currently more than 2,300 sexual assault and harassment lawsuits against Uber, from drivers and passengers, and a judge is allowing evidence that gender-matching could have prevented attacks.

Starting Friday, riders in Tucson now have the choice to be driven by an Arizona woman.

About 12 years ago, Megan Hjelle booked a ride she wishes she could forget.

“I used other ride share services. I had a very, very traumatizing experience,” Hjelle said.

For years, she shut the door on rideshares, but one day she ran out of options and gave it another chance.
