On the third Friday of September, National POW/MIA Recognition Day was observed with a watch fire on the bayfront, honoring missing service personnel.

For over a decade, a local veteran's group has been lighting a watch fire to ensure the day does not go unnoticed. The event included cannon fire on the hour, a rifle salute, and taps, symbolically guiding missing heroes home.

"Our chapter has been doing this for at least 15 years to honor POWs and MIAs" said Dennis Newara, a member of Vietnam Veterans of America Chapter #435.

"I thank my lucky stars every day" said Skip Zieber, another member of the chapter, reflecting on his time as combat infantry.
