Two of college football's most storied and historically decorated programs will square off this weekend.

No. 20 Michigan will look to continue its rebound from a Week 2 loss at No. 12 Oklahoma when it heads west to take on an undefeated Nebraska team on Saturday, Sept. 20 at Memorial Stadium in Lincoln, Nebraska.

The matchup is the first Big Ten game of the season for both programs.

After a predictably difficult showing against a Brent Venables-led defense in a 24-13 loss to Oklahoma on Sept. 6, Wolverines five-star freshman quarterback Bryce Underwood bounced back last Saturday, accounting for 349 total yards and three touchdowns in a 63-3 win against Central Michigan. As it tries to stretch its winning streak to two, Michigan will be without head coach Sherrone Moore, who will be serving the second game of a two-game suspension handed down by the school in the wake of the Wolverines' sign-stealing scandal. Associate head coach Biff Poggi, who was the head coach at Charlotte from 2023-24, will serve as the interim head coach for the second week in a row.

With Poggi in charge, Michigan will take on a Nebraska team that has won its past two games, against Akron and Houston Christian, by a combined score of 127-7. The victories marked the first time the Cornhuskers have scored at least 50 points in consecutive games since 2007. Sophomore quarterback Dylan Raiola was sharp in both games, throwing for a combined 586 yards, six touchdowns and no interceptions.

The two programs, who shared the 1997 national championship, have played seven times since Nebraska joined the Big Ten ahead of the 2011 season. Michigan has won five of those games, including each of the past four, three of which were decided by at least 31 points.

  • Prediction: Nebraska 24, Michigan 23

A Huskers program that has been defined by close losses for nearly a decade now has already shown this season it can pull out tight victories, with a three-point win over Cincinnati to its name. The Wolverines will be much tougher than that middling Bearcats squad, but with a more experienced quarterback guiding what's been an explosive offense, Nebraska will be carried by a spirited home crowd to win a nail-biter.
