The state Legislature last week passed a ban on “robobosses,” but a bill that would have regulated automated decision-making systems more broadly didn’t make it out of the body.
Both bills faced stiff pushback from tech and business groups. Despite such opposition, legislators gave their approval to Senate Bill 7 , which would prohibit employers from leaving it up to artificial-intelligence or automated systems to determine who gets fired or disciplined and would require them to notify employees when they use such systems to help make those decisions.
But in the face of the pushback and questions about whether Gov. Gavin Newsom would sign the legislation, Democratic Assemblymember Rebecca Bauer-Kahan of Orinda pulled from the Legislature’s consideration her Assembly Bill 1018 .
