To start with, Sydney McLaughlin-Levrone became the 400m world champion, defeating the reigning Olympic champion, Marileidy Paulino, by 0.2 seconds. Her winning time of 47.78 is the second-fastest in recorded history, just behind the world record of 47.60 set by East Germany’s Marita Koch in 1985.
