The Sarnia Sting almost escaped the first period with a scoreless tie in Friday’s season opener.

They didn’t, however, and the game quickly unravelled.

The Windsor Spitfires scored with 15.9 seconds to go and then romped in the final two periods for an 8-1 win before 3,749 fans at Progressive Auto Sales Arena.

“We just got outworked, outcompeted,” Sting head coach Alan Letang said.

The Sting were too soft on the puck and made too many simple mistakes, he said.

“We play a good 19 minutes and 43 seconds, and then we make a soft play at the blue-line, they get the first goal and we kind of lose our edge, we lose our energy,” he said. “I’ll take the blame. I’ll take the heat for that.
