Curtis Sliwa has always been prepared to take a bullet for residents of New York City.

Or six.

While Sliwa has been shot, stabbed, threatened and beaten, he’s never been intimidated. There are no angels in the New York City mayor’s race except, of course, for Sliwa. Wearing his famous red beret, he’s been the Big Apple’s Guardian Angel for 46 years.

The public safety and crime-fighting volunteer organization he founded in 1979 has ridden the subway and patrolled neighbourhoods in response to escalating crime and he’s seen his own people die and come close himself. But will voters make this story one for the movies by electing Sliwa as New York’s 111th mayor?
