SULLIVAN’S ISLAND, S.C. (WCBD) – Several volunteers held Beach Sweeps Saturday in an effort to clean up and preserve Lowcountry waterways.

On Sullivan’s Island, the South Carolina Department of Natural Resources brought community members and organizations together for the 36th annual Beach Sweep.

Officials estimate that millions of pieces of trash end up on coastal shores each year, which endangers marine life and poses hazards to beachgoers. As a result, volunteers join together to clean up the area.

Hundreds of volunteers gathered on Saturday at Cannon Row on Poe Avenue, with gloves and trash bags in hand, ready to make a difference by clearing away the litter.
