Volunteers took part Saturday in a collective cleanup effort at Rio de Janeiro's Copacabana Beach as part of World Cleanup Day.

In just a few hours, organizers said they collected more than 730 kilograms (1,600 pounds) of trash from the sand.

The campaign began Tuesday and wrapped up Saturday, with Rio de Janeiro as the main stage.

The state-run energy company Petrobras and the nonprofit Instituto Limpa Brasil led the campaign.

World Cleanup Day is a United Nations-backed global event.

In Brazil, activities were held in 37 cities across the country.

Instituto Limpa said all solid waste collected will be sent to recycling cooperatives responsible for sorting and processing it.

The effort aims to support the circular economy and generate income for local communities.

Organizers noted that in the 2024 campaign, more than 600,000 volunteers were mobilized nationwide and about 1,200 tons of waste were collected.
