With the City Council budget vote approaching, local nonprofits face significant funding cuts that threaten their ability to serve the community. Dawn Lockhart, CEO of the Nonprofit Center of Northeast Florida, explained the financial struggles these organizations are experiencing.

“We have about 7,000 nonprofit organizations, of which 1,500 actually file 990s so those are the ones we have data on. All of those organizations, 35% of them are in the red and only a third of them have reserves and that is data we were able to glean from 2023 when their tax forms were filed. So roll that forward to today, with the cut in funding and the loss of CARES Act funding, and we’ve got some hurting organizations,” Lockhart said.
