BANGOR, Maine (WABI) - Hundreds pounded the pavement on the Bangor Waterfront Saturday, hoping to bring suicide awareness into the light.
This is through the annual Out of the Darkness Walk, put on by the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention (AFSP).
“The Out of the Darkness walk, it brings people together who have been either, directly affected by suicide, that maybe they had a loss from suicide, maybe they had an attempt of suicide,” explains George Mageles, Board Chair for the Maine chapter of AFSP. “It also brings together people who want to support those who have been affected and those who want to understand more.”
In 2023, 274 Mainers lost their life to suicide. On average, there are 266 suicide deaths in the state every year.
