Pedaling into the last leg of their over 4,300 mile journey, tandem bikers JB Owen and Peter Giesin stopped in Fairbanks last Friday, planning to head down to Homer.
But the couple never made it down, ending their journey in Fairbanks and heading home to Canada a few days later, after pondering the closing of campgrounds and incoming inclement weather.
Though it ended somewhat unexpectedly in Fairbanks, their journey began on June 15 in Cabo San Lucas, Mexico.
They headed north up the coast of the continent, cycling with the goal of setting a world record for elevation gain on a tandem bicycle.
“We wanted to do the entire stretch of the continent on the west coast,” Owen said. “We wanted to pick something we hadn’t really done before.”
The couple averaged 60 miles on the bike each day
