The Southern Professional Hockey League announced Wednesday that it will expand to Mobile, after a unanimous approval from the league's Board of Governors.

The new team, set to play in the 2027-28 season, will be owned and operated by Zawyer Sports and Entertainment, a company with a proven track record in professional sports management.

"We are excited and proud to bring professional hockey back to Mobile," said Sawyer CEO Andy Kaufmann in a statement. "We will aim to place a competitive team on the ice while also providing a fun, family-friendly product both in the stands and in the community. We look forward to ushering in this new era of hockey in the city's brand-new arena."

Mobile will be the latest city to join the SPHL, which currently includes teams in Birmingham and Hunts
