LANSING — The Michigan Department of Natural Resources is warning residents and visitors to about fire risks this fall.

The DNR said dry weather and debris from March’s ice storm have created dangerous conditions in Northern Michigan forests.

“We had a dry fall last year and many fire runs,” said Jeff Vasher, DNR resource protection manager. “We want to remind people to be careful and always keep fire safety in mind when they are burning, riding off-road vehicles or enjoying other outdoor activities.”

Officials say 9 out of 10 wildfires are started by people and can be preventable.

Downed trees and branches from the ice storm have been drying all summer, and Vasher said they can ignite quickly.
