DEKALB COUNTY, Ga. — A DeKalb County father has learned his sentence after pleading guilty to the death of his son , who was killed with his unattended firearm on Thursday, the district attorney's office said.

44-year-old Dante Lamar Daugherty took a non-negotiated guilty plea for second-degree murder, two counts of second-degree cruelty to children in connection with the death of his 7-year-old son Z'ayre Daugherty. He was sentenced to 10 years, with two years in custody and the rest on probation.

The incident happened on September 4, 2023, when officers responded to a person who had been shot at a gas station on Rock Chapel Road in Lithonia.

Officers found the 44-year-old father holding his son, who had been shot in the head. The 7-year-old died on the scene.
