CHEROKEE COUNTY, S.C. —

The Cherokee County Sheriff's Office said a man is now facing charges in connection with the death of a man who was reported missing several years ago.

Sheriff Steve Mueller said his office was contacted on Aug. 22 by the Spartanburg County Cold Case Unit about a missing man, Kevin Scott Brookshire.

Sheriff Mueller said that same day, deputies executed a search warrant at a home on Robbs School Road in Gaffney and discovered human remains in the backyard.

On Sept. 15 the Cherokee County Coroner's Office identified the remains as Brookshire.

According to the sheriff, work to identify a person of interest led them to John Lucas Rice.

The Sheriff said Rice was detained in Shelby, North Carolina and when interviewed by Cherokee County deputies he confessed to kill
