LAPORTE COUNTY, Ind. (WNDU) - A bicyclist is dead after police say he was hit by a semi on Friday morning in LaPorte County.

It happened just before noon at State Road 39 and County Road 900 North.

According to police, a group of bicyclists were riding south on the shoulder of State Road 39 when a southbound semi being driven by a 64-year-old DeMotte man moved to the left in a passing zone to pass the bicyclists.

While doing so, police say one of the cyclists, 29-year-old Mason Anderson of Chicago, began making a left turn onto County Road 900 North.

The semi driver reportedly steered further left to try to avoid Anderson, but sadly they collided.

Anderson died at the scene.

Police say the crash remains under investigation.
