Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) bank account checks are moving a step closer. Under the shake-up, the DWP will be able to request banking information from benefits claimants, in a move branded "Orwellian" and "dystopian".
The new powers are part of the Public Authorities (Fraud, Error and Recovery) Bill, which is currently progressing through Parliament. Having received approval from the House of Commons, the bill is now being considered by the House of Lords. The report stage is scheduled to commence on 15 October.
The DWP said previously: "Eligibility verification notices will be sent to banks and other financial institutions and will set out the specific information required.
