President Donald Trump has nominated Lindsey Halligan to serve as the U.S. attorney for the Eastern District of Virginia. This announcement follows the resignation of the previous U.S. attorney, Erik Siebert, amid political pressures related to an investigation involving New York Attorney General Letitia James.
In a post on Truth Social, Trump praised Halligan as a "tough, smart, and loyal attorney" who has been part of his legal team for several years. He stated, "[Halligan] is extremely intelligent, fearless and... has the strength and determination to be absolutely OUTSTANDING in this new and very important role."
Halligan has previously represented Trump during the FBI's investigation into the retention of classified documents at his Mar-a-Lago estate. Recently, she has been involved in efforts to address what the administration describes as "anti-American ideology" in Smithsonian museums.
The nomination comes at a time of turmoil within the U.S. attorney's office, which has faced pressure from Trump administration officials to pursue criminal charges against James. The investigation centers on allegations of mortgage fraud related to discrepancies in paperwork for James' properties. James' legal team has denied any wrongdoing, labeling the investigation as politically motivated.
Siebert resigned on Friday, with Trump asserting on social media that he had fired him. Trump claimed that Siebert was backed by Democratic Senators Mark Warner and Tim Kaine, stating, "Next time let him go in as a Democrat, not a Republican."
In his social media announcement, Trump emphasized the urgency of Halligan's nomination, stating, "We can’t delay any longer, it’s killing our reputation and credibility. Justice must be served, NOW!"
Halligan's confirmation would place her in charge of an office that has been under scrutiny for its handling of politically sensitive investigations. The Justice Department has been investigating the allegations against James for several months, but no charges have been filed to date.
Trump's administration has been vocal about its desire for retribution against political opponents, and Halligan's nomination reflects this ongoing theme. As the situation develops, it remains to be seen how Halligan will navigate the challenges ahead in her new role.
