Prince George’s County officials had raised some concerns about a charter school’s stability months before it abruptly closed in August, records show.
District officials sent a letter in the spring warning that the charter for Excel Academy Public Charter School might not be renewed for the 2026-27 academic year due to concerns about the school’s finances. The school’s operator said the institution struggled to grow its enrollment after the pandemic and a move to a new location in Fort Washington.
Lisa Butler McDougal, president and CEO of SEED, the operator, said Prince George’s County Public Schools officials in August proposed that Excel merge with another charter organization in a bid to stay open longer. But less than two weeks later, talks with the other organization fell through,
