MISSOULA — Before cross country runners across Montana descend on Zootown for the state championship Oct. 25, they get one shot at feeling out the terrain at the Mountain West Classic.

Held on, through and around the University of Montana golf course, the classic is one of the marquee races on the high-school cross country calendar each fall. Two new runners took home the top podium spots Saturday morning, as Miles Halvorsen (Bozeman) and Addison Kegel (Billings Central) emerged victorious.

After finishing at 13th at the Class AA state race as a sophomore, Bozeman's Miles Halvorsen appeared primed for a junior-year leap up to the podium. However, a lung-infection fueled illness kept the runner from finding his stride.
