A man who avoided jail after dumping his girlfriend’s pet pythons on the street after a nasty break-up came close to death when he got behind the wheel after an all-day bender.

Justin Downs, 27, was charged and convicted with one count of domestic violence related destruction of property after he dumped the snake enclosures on a street in Coogee nearly two years ago.

Snakes Mango and Bagel survived the ordeal and Downs was sentenced to a community correction order last September.

Downs’ latest court appearance was in relation to a number of drink driving offences, including one in which he drunkenly rear-ended a vehicle in Randwick and ended up being thrown out of his car, lying unconscious in the middle of the road.
