News-Miner opinion: The Fairbanks North Star Borough Assembly was right to adopt a resolution urging the Alaska Legislature to help bulk purchase wildfire structural defense kits for high-risk communities. The Interior has long lived with fire as a seasonal reality, but recent summers have underscored just how quickly those fires can turn from distant smoke plumes into neighborhood-level emergencies.

The resolution, sponsored by Assemblymember Barbara Haney, presses the state to buy defense kits — complete with hoses, sprinklers, tripods, pumps and water storage — and resell them at a discount to communities or residents. At roughly $8,000 per kit, they are not cheap, but they are cheaper than rebuilding homes, lives and entire subdivisions. Haney is correct to call the kits “game change
