Born and raised in Fairbanks to a family of third-generation Alaskans and teachers, Garrett Armstrong graduated from West Valley High in 2005 before spending time in Montana, Ukraine with the Peace Corps, and on the North Slope as a teacher. He returned home to teach physical education at Woodriver Elementary, the same school he once attended. Armstrong serves on the board of the Fairbanks Education Association and the Fairbanks Cycle Club, and is also active with the Nordic Ski Club and Curling Club.
