GAINESVILLE, Fla. (WCJB) - On Rosh HaShanah, Jewish communities traditionally cast their sins into water during Tashlich, symbolizing a fresh start for the new year.

This year, some are taking it a step further with Reverse Tashlich. This new initiative encourages attendees to remove trash from parks and waterways instead of casting something away.

Linda E. Maurice, Executive Director of the Jewish Council, explains the importance,

“It’s more important now than ever. With cuts to national parks and environmental protections, we need to take it upon ourselves to care for our world.”

For Maurice, seeing the community take part in the cleanup is moving.

“It’s heartwarming to see others in our community feel as strongly as we do about keeping our home beautiful and clean.”
