An emergency alert has been issued due to a wildfire encroaching on a community in southern Alberta near Medicine Hat on Sunday.

According to the Alberta Emergency Alert, the fire is east of the community of Dunmore and threatens residential homes.

It also says winds are coming in from the west.

Authorities are asking anyone in the immediate area of the fire, which is south of Highway 1 along Range Road 40, to evacuate by taking Range Road 40 if it’s safe to do so.

The alert also asks anyone in the area to seek shelter in an open area clear of trees, plants and flammable structures.

Dunmore is around 275 kilometres southeast of Calgary.
