Towards the end of Breaking Benjamin’s set on Saturday night, Sept. 20, at the Pine Knob Music Theatre, frontman Ben Burnley spoke about how easy and comfortable it is to be touring once again with Three Days Grace.

“And when you get to be old like me,” Burnley — all of 47 — told the crowd, “comfort is all that matters.”

The pairing — which closed this year’s WRIF-FM Riff Fest on their way to performances Sunday, Sept. 21, at the Louder Than Life festival in Kentucky — was, in fact, a sort of musical comfort food for the nearly 15,000 in attendance. Both bands are of the same vintage and have, during the past 20-odd years, populated rock radio with a healthy dose of high-octane, heavy-hitting songs that helped define the format.
