Former prime minister Tony Abbott has warned Australia risks committing “national economic suicide” if it pushes ahead with Labor’s emissions reduction targets, arguing the Coalition will be rewarded by dumping net zero.

The Albanese government’s decision to set its 2035 emissions reduction target at 62 to 70 per cent has coincided with a collapse in support for the Coalition, with the latest Newspoll showing Labor now has a 58 to 42 per cent two-party-preferred lead over the Opposition.

Writing in The Daily Telegraph on Monday, Mr Abbott said the Albanese government’s announcement of a 70 per cent reduction in carbon emissions by 2035 could become a “death warrant” for the Albanese government.
