OMAHA, Neb. —

Organized crime groups are targeting ATMs across Nebraska, using sophisticated hacking techniques to steal large sums of money, according to recent investigations.

It's called ATM jackpotting and the FBI said it's impacting banks and credit unions across the country, including here in Nebraska.

"They install some sort of malware, either by implanting malware on the machine or connecting another device to the machine," said Eugene Kowel, the special agent in charge of the FBI Omaha office. "Either way, they do it in such a way that they can get control of the machine and force the ATM to deliver essentially unlimited cash until the machine runs out of money."
