This month, the University of Michigan’s Office of the Vice President for Research eliminated “ block funding ” for the arts and humanities, ending what faculty say was a flow of money that sustained small-scale, experimental and exploratory creative work since 2021. Block funding pooled contributions from OVPR and the University’s schools, which was then distributed internally through faculty committees. The move comes after federal funding — including grant terminations — led the University to tighten budgets across campus. The budget cuts include pausing the Epidemiology doctoral program, closing the University’s Consulting for Statistics, Computing and Analytics Research unit and other measures .
