A devastating fire at an apartment building in Long Beach early Sunday morning claimed the lives of 32 cats and one dog, leaving the building’s residents shaken but unharmed.

The blaze broke out around 7:15 a.m. at the Lindenwood Apartment Complex on the 3500 block of Linden Avenue, according to a statement from the Long Beach Fire Department. Firefighters arriving on the scene found heavy smoke billowing from a third-floor unit. Crews quickly entered the unit and extinguished the flames, preventing the fire from spreading to other apartments.

The unit suffered significant damage, and one resident was displaced, but no human injuries were reported. Red Cross assistance was not needed, Capt. Jack Crabtree of the Long Beach Fire Department said.
